In One Word: Eclectic
It was 1:30 a.m. and the crowd started to get restless, but it was well worth the wait.
U.K.’s Dan Croll stole the show at Wrong Bar, wrapping up a night full of great music. Dan Croll’s set of eclectic and upbeat music kept the crowd awake and moving during the late-night show. With a setlist comprised of nearly every song off his LP Sweet Disarray, Croll kept the audience dancing with favourites such as the rhythmic “Compliment Your Soul” and the sweeter, melodic “Home”.
Croll takes full advantage of his ability to mix-and-match pieces from different genres and make an entirely unique and musically interesting song. Prime examples of this technique include the aforementioned “Compliment Your Soul” and “Wanna Know”, blending elements from folksy acoustics, electronic synth sounds and beats, and African polyrhythms.
Taking breaks in between songs to form a rapport with his captive audience, Croll maintained a modest and inviting demeanor, even bringing up an audience member onstage to get the rest of the group to sing her “Happy Birthday” before joking around about just getting back from the Meshuggah concert.
My personal favourite bit of the set was the live performance of “From Nowhere”, a song that you can’t help but dance along to. Dan Croll’s energy and demeanor makes for a performance that far surpasses his recordings.
Dan Croll’s LP Sweet Disarray is available now, and while he’s not slated to perform in Toronto again any time soon, we can cross our fingers that will change.
